Who says great finds still don’t occur in the hobby? In 2006, an original package of Honest Long Cut cigarettes was found in a trunk in an upstairs attic. The Northeastern locale had preserved the tobacco and the accompanying trading card for nearly a century. When the original owner discovered the subject was Ty Cobb, the antiquity was eventually submitted to SGC for evaluation. Graded 40 VG 3 by the trusted grading service, this astounding 1912 T227 Honest Long Cut Ty Cobb relic displays a stunning presentation appeal. The crease-free Cobb exhibits moderate surface and reverse staining from being in the package for so long, relatively sharp corners and decent centering. Of the (25) similar examples reported by the grading service, this Hall of Famer shares the grading tier with three others and three which grade better. The original packaging is low-grade, the card and cigarettes having since been removed. This impressive tandem is ideal for the discerning collector who appreciates the “champion batsman” and the compelling story surrounding its discovery.
